In a Wisconsin church, Scott Anderson's landmark ordination was greeted with rousing speeches and thunderous applause.
The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) has ordained its first openly gay minister. Scott Anderson in Milkwaukee was forced to leave his post as minister in 1990 after he revealed his sexual orientation. After the church’s national assembly voted last year to remove the ban on gay ministers, he returned to his church for ordination this weekend. The 56-year-old became the first openly gay minister on Sunday, and received a standing ovation from the usually reserved crowd at Covenant Presbyterian Church. Though Anderson already serves as executive director of the Wisconsin Council of Churches, he will now be able to administer sacraments and can become a parish minister. In other news, the United Church of Canada has had gay ministers for like, ages.
