Canadian Environmental Network Shut Down

A large environmental group advising Ottawa about Canadian environmental concerns has been cut unexpectedly.
The Canadian Environmental Network suffered a massive blow Thursday as the federal government announced its $547,000 budget would not be renewed. The three decade old grassroots organization closed Friday and will likely lose its federal offices. The network served to connect 640 Canadian environmental groups with the federal government, and offered consultation to Ottawa about new laws and policies. It also helped draft various pieces of environmental legislation including the Canadian Environmental Protection Act. Instead, the federal government will focus on “more direct use of web-based consultation” (read: look stuff up online.)
