The NDP leader says Parliament ought to discuss with the private sector how to keep CEO salaries in line.
Nycole Turmel, the interim leader of the New Democratic Party, has really taken the whole "99 per cent" thing to heart, suggesting on Power and Politics last night that the government should look at ways to limit the bonuses and raises given to private sector CEOs. Turmel proposed that the feds should legislate ceilings for how much a CEO's salary can increase each year, and that increases and bonuses ought to be tied to how much a company reinvests in hiring new employees. So it appears as if the Occupy movement has a champion in Parliament, even if the chances of the Conservative government actually taking Turmel up on her offer are about as good the chances of the prime minister slaughtering a live kitten on television. Either way, Turmel joins Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney in showing their support to the Occupy protesters, who are now into their fourth day of occupying public spaces in Canadian cities to protest income inequality.
