Some accuse it of having an “it gets better, but we kind of hope it doesn’t” undertone.
Shortly after the funeral of Ottawa city councilor Allan Hubley’s son, Conservative MPs and staffers released an It Gets Better video calling for bullied youth, especially gay and suicidal teens, to seek help. Conservative MP’s including Public Safety Minister Vic Toews (who voted against gay marriage in ’06 because “it could lead to polygamy”) are featured repeating the line “it gets better” after Wednesday’s caucus meeting. Dan Savage, the columnist who started the movement, said this was “quite literally the least they could do.” While many welcome the attempt at inclusion, others (including NDP MP Randall Garrison) have criticized the video for its hypocrisy and its robotic and impersonal feel (what? From the Conservatives?).
