Get ready for a whole new year of raving over the royals as the government gets set to honour the Queen's diamond jubilee with miniature Canadian flags.

The Conservative government has tendered a contract that would see the winning bid produce 500,000 miniature Canadian flags in time to honour Queen Elizabeth II's 60th anniversary upon the throne next year. The so-called diamond jubilee will be celebrated across the Commonwealth, giving the monarchists populating the front benches of the Tory government yet another opportunity to remind Canadians that we're ruled by an elderly lady with a funny accent who lives in a castle across the sea. Our biggest qualm with this order of flags is that it's way too small. Five hundred thousand? There are nearly 35 million people in this fine country, meaning a lot of monarchists are going to go home empty-handed during these celebrations. At least the rest of us can hope to get an abortion instead.
