Francois Legault's Coalition-Avenir-Quebec promises to shake up the province by bringing together federalists and sovereigntists with a right-of-centre bent.
Provincial politics in Quebec are about to get even more topsy-turvy, as former Parti Québécois cabinet minister Francois Legault has filed the paperwork to officially register his new party, Coalition-Avenir-Quebec. The new party will be officially proclaimed on Nov. 14 after the province's electoral officer confirms the identities of 100 people who signed their support for the CAQ. Legault's popularity has skyrocketed in recent months as dissatisfaction with the Parti Québécois Leader Pauline Marois has prompted rumours of an insurrection in the separatist party. Legault has already won the support of a handful of PQ MNAs, and recent polls show that he and his party would likely win in an election against Marois and Jean Charest's Liberals. The CAQ has called for an end to the separatist plight in favour of focusing on strengthening the province's economy, infrastructure, and education system.
