For locals, the demise of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Columbia has been long-awaited.
Alfonso Cano, the commander of the Bolivian-inspired FARC in Columbia, has been killed by a bombing raid in Cauca. He led the longest-lived insurgency in the region, responsible for guerrilla fighting and drug wars. President Juan Manuel Santos has called the death a historic moment, after nearly 50 years of strife. The government has been trying to eradicate the right-wing corrupt "anti-corruption" paramilitary group for years.
