Twitter Account To Broadcast Names of All Canadian War Dead

  • First Posted: Nov 09 2011 09:01 AM

An Ottawa Citizen project will spend the next 13 years honouring every Canadian killed in armed conflict.

Starting today at 11:11 a.m. EST, a Twitter account will publish the names of dead Canadian soldiers on the hour, every hour until all 119,000 men and women have been honoured. The account, @WeAreTheDead, is a project undertaken by the Ottawa Citizen to commemorate Canada's war dead beyond the usual Remembrance Day ceremonies. Victims of every war Canada's been a part of since the First World War will have their names broadcast on the social network, as well as their ranks, date of death, and where they died. It will take until June 2025 to get through every name, each of which will be selected at random by an algorithm. The account takes its name from a line in John McCrae's poem, In Flanders Fields.
