The UN says at least 3,500 people have been killed since March.
Despite a formal suspension this week from the Arab League, violent clashes have continued in Syria, leaving France and Turkey ready to take action. In addition to direct pressure from their respective countries, French and Turkish diplomats now insist that the UN Security Council should help stop the violence in Syria. Opposition from Russia and China has meant that so far, the council has been unable to even condemn the regime as it teeters on civil war. Meanwhile, the leader of the Syrian Free Army, Riad al As’ad (note the crucial apostrophe), has called for a no-fly-zone and two buffer areas to help reach Assad, though no country has formally offered the group assistance.
