Like in Tunisia, the people of Morocco have elected a moderate Islamist Party.
In north Africa’s second democratic election since the start of the Arab Spring, Morocco has elected the Justice and Development Party. If the results are upheld, the king will choose a prime minister from the moderate Islamist party, which will be entitled to lead a coalition. The 13-year-old political party is known for its loyalty to the monarchy and for advocating a “progressive approach to Islam,” promoting religion with a concern for the poor. As Morocco’s first democratically elected government, they will also be able to appoint ministers and dissolve parliament. The current prime minister’s party came in second place and a centre-right party came in third.
