Two Islamist parties take the majority of seats, though final results have yet to be confirmed.
Preliminary results from the first round of Egypt’s long-anticipated parliamentary elections are in. According to reports, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party took 40 per cent of the vote, with another 20 per cent of votes going towards the Nour Party – a hardline Islamist group. The Egyptian Bloc-Liberals and the moderate Islamic Al Wasat together took the rest of the seats. As voter turnout reached a record high, moderates in Egypt are left worried about the impact of the Nour Party on the new constitution. According to its platform, it advocates for strict adherence to Islamic law, even in the realms of speech, women’s attire, and personal freedoms. The other 70 per cent of seats will be allocated in two more votes early next year.
