A new document presented to the Saudi king's advisory council has shed light on what is really at stake in letting women drive.
According to a Saudi Arabian activist and scholar, a document sent to the country’s formal advisory body ties women driving to premarital sex and an ensuing shortage of virgin brides. The report, said to be written by a scholar named Kamal Subhi, was submitted to the all-male Shura Council as Saudi women continue to protest the driving ban. The king has already shown some willingness for reform, and recently promised to let women vote in municipal elections. In some accounts, the report also links women driving to an increase in rampant sex, pornography, prostitution, divorce, and homosexuality.
