After Duceppe, does anyone really souviens anymore?
Normally party leadership elections in Canada get at least a little bit of lip service on the front page of local newspapers. Not so much with the Bloc Québécois, who are very, very quietly choosing a new leader today. It’s been a rough year. The party has a long way to go after May’s federal election, where they reduced their 47 seats to four, lost leader Gilles Duceppe, and subsequently lost over a quarter of their membership . Now, current MPs Maria Mourani and Jean-Francois Fortin are racing against Daniel Paille in a leadership contest that has garnered less attention than most low budget reality shows. Just hundreds tuned in to watch their leadership debate, making today’s mail-in vote one of the least significant in history.
