Celine Dion's Husband Buys Schwartz's Deli

Thousands of Montrealers now forced to decide whether fattening Celine Dion's wallet is worth fattening their veins.
Schwartz's Deli, Montreal's Mecca, or, err, Wailing Wall of smoked meat, has been bought by Rene Angelil, the husband of Celine Dion, and a group of investors for $10 million, according to reports. The deli, the most beloved in Canada, is rivalled only by Katz's in New York in the eyes of smoked meat lovers across the continent. As such, seeing it bought out by the husband and manager of one of the most flavourless singers of all time hurts the discerning carnivore in us. After all, Angelil and Dion are also the purveyors of Nickel's, a chain of diners across Quebec and Ontario whose food could at best be called edible. Schwartz's, also known as Montreal's Hebrew Delicatessen, has been clogging arteries throughout Montreal since 1928, when Romanian immigrant Reuben Schwartz opened the doors to the deli on St. Laurent. The deli's owners have steadfastly refused to expand the restaurant into a chain, although whether that will continue under Angelil's ownership remains to be seen.
