Contributor Biography

Dr. Brown is an Associate Professor of political science at the University of Ottawa. He holds a Bachelor’s from the University of Ottawa (1989), a Master’s from the London School of Economics (1990), a Ph.D from New York University (2000), and was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Toronto (2000-2002). He teaches courses on comparative politics, the politics of foreign aid, the political economy of development, and democratization.

Prior to obtaining his Ph.D., he worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP, 1990-94) and has served more recently as a consultant for several development-related organizations, including UNDP, the Development Assistance Committee of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD/DAC), and the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).

His main research interests are foreign aid, democratization, political violence, peacebuilding, and transitional justice – mainly in relation to Sub-Saharan Africa. He has conducted research in Kenya, Malawi, Rwanda, Angola, Mozambique, South Africa, and Argentina. He was recently awarded a grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) for his research on Canadian development assistance.

His work has been published in a number of edited volumes and journals, including: Third World Quarterly, European Journal of Development Research, Canadian Journal of Development Studies, Journal of Contemporary African Studies, Canadian Journal of African Studies, and Latin American Perspectives.
