Contributor Biography

With nearly 20 years experience as a science educator and researcher, Dr. Evans has recently committed to science outreach and communication efforts on behalf of Ryerson University. Working closely with community organizations such as the Visions of Science Network of Learning and Covenant House, his outreach focus has been on disadvantaged youth in the city. He has also been active in more traditional outreach efforts, sitting on the steering committee for the Toronto region-wide Science Rendezvous event and spearheading Ryerson’s participation in this annual celebration of all things scientific. He is also a member of the steering committee for the Toronto chapter of the Sanofi-Aventis BioTalent Challenge, a high-level science competition for high school students.

A chemist by training, his research explores applications of concepts in molecular association to the development of new materials for land mine detection, the removal of pollutants from water, and drug delivery. He is also interested in the chemistry of 19th- and early 20th-century photographic processes and how this chemistry influences their longevity.

At Ryerson since 1998, he has taken on increasingly complex administrative roles while maintaining an active research agenda and commitment to classroom teaching. He is currently Associate Dean with responsibility for science programs at Ryerson.
