Mr. Smith is a foreign correspondent for The Globe and Mail, Canada's national newspaper. He was stationed in Afghanistan from 2006-2009. Previously he was based in Moscow. His many awards include three National Newspaper Awards, Canada's highest prize for print journalism, and the annual Michener Award for public service given by the Governor General of Canada.
