Contributor Biography

Dr. Cameron earned his Ph.D. in 1989 from the University of California at Berkeley. He teaches comparative politics (Latin America) in the Department of Political Science, University of British Columbia. His publications include: Democracy and Authoritarianism in Peru (1994), The Peruvian Labyrinth (1997), The Political Economy of North American Free Trade (1993), To Walk Without Fear: The Global Movement to Ban Landmines (1998) and The Making of NAFTA: How the Deal Was Done (2000).

Between March and June of 2006, Cameron served as Political Advisor to the Electoral Observation Mission of the Organization of American States in Peru. In 2007-2008 he organized two workshops on Latin America's "Left Turns" (one funded by the Peter Wall Institute of Advanced Studies, the other by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council). This resulted in a thematic issue of Third World Quarterly (March, Vol 32, no. 2, 2009) and a book which is under review.

He is currently organizing a research network to monitor and report on the state of democracy in the Andean region, with support from the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade's Glyn Berry Program for Peace and Security.
