Contributor Biography

Tony Martin has a long and distinguished career standing up for the people of his riding.

His life long work as an anti-poverty activist and as a member of the Human Resources Parliamentary committee is interwoven with many women’s issues: Day Care, anti-poverty strategies, housing, Pay equity, to name a few.

During Tony’s 19 years as an elected representative, he has been a passionate fighter for Northern jobs and industries. He worked on the successful restructuring of Algoma Steel and St. Mary’s Paper, has aided area farmers in getting necessary assistance, won guarantees for wood and tree supplies for local forestry businesses, introduced successful legislation to improve protections for franchise owners. He has also lobbied successfully for dozens of infrastructure projects throughout his riding.

Tony was first elected Member of Parliament for the Riding of Sault Ste. Marie o June 28th, 2004. As M.P. Tony serves as the senior policy critic and the poverty critic for his caucus. He serves on the Human Resources, Skills Development, Social Development and Persons with Disabilities Committee of Parliament. He is a member of the Steel Caucus, the Outdoor Caucus, Border Caucus and Vice Chair of the NDP Northern Caucus.

Serving as MP for 5 years, Tony’s hard work has garnered national media attention and has earned him the respect of members from all parties in the House of Commons.

Tony was born in Ireland and immigrated to Wawa with his family in 1960. He graduated from Laurentian University with a degree in Political Science in 1974 and is married to Saultite Anna Celetti. They have four children.
