Contributor Biography
John C. Major is a retired Supreme Court of Canada and Alberta Court of Appeal judge. Currently, Mr. Major provides strategic and tactical reviews of significant matters for firm clients. His practice includes mediation, arbitration, corporate governance, and consultation. He is a member of the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice and the Canadian Judges Conference.
Mr. Major graduated from Loyola College with a BComm in 1953 and from the University of Toronto with an LLB in 1957. He was called to Alberta Bar in 1958 and appointed as Queen’s Counsel in 1972. He received Honorary Doctor of Laws degrees from Concordia University in 2003, from the University of Toronto in 2005, and from the University of Calgary in 2005.
In 2006, Mr. Major was appointed to the Alberta Securities Commission as an independent member. The same year, he was appointed as Commissioner to conduct an inquiry into the investigation of the bombing of Air India Flight 182. In July 2008, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of Canada.
