Courtney Lawrence
Visual Anthropologist.
Contributor Biography
Ms. Lawrence (BASc, MSc) is an Oxford-educated visual anthropologist who spends half of her time doing visual anthropology and the other half trying to explain what it is to people. She is on the cusp of starting a consulting business in Toronto specializing in using visually-oriented qualitative research methods to assess and enhance programs and services within community-based organizations. As a freelance social researcher and writer she has worked for the Centre for Social Innovation, the Unit for Biocultural Variation and Obesity at the University of Oxford, and Curiosity Inc., a market insight and education consultancy.
Her primary interests lie in understanding human behaviour and group interactions within material and social environments and in bringing individuals’ perspectives to life. She also has a soft spot for innovative business and educational models, which push the boundaries of creativity and aspire to change the way we think. In sum, Ms. Lawrence has a strong bias for words starting with the letter C: culture, creativity, collaboration, community, and so on.
She has an everlasting love for inquiry and self-learning which permeates into her teachings as a part-time yoga instructor and leads her to far off lands for personal and professional development. You can see some of her reflections on her blog, The Curious Culturalist.
