HRW is calling for an end to rape, murder, and looting in the DRC and recommending the UN create stronger measures to protect civilians.
As MONUC shifts to civilian protection, a UN-DRC envoy says it achieved its objectives, while acknowledging accusations of rape and murder.
The situation in the DRC remains volatile, but MONUC has had some small successes. However, violence and resource exploitation continues.
UN member states undergo a human rights review every four years. The DRC underwent this review in December, 2009.
WHO has registers more than 44,000 refugees in the Republic of Congo. Meanwhile, cholera outbreaks continue to climb in the Kivu provinces.
